National Tartan Day in the US is observed on 6 April each year. The Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on the noted date in 1320. The American declaration was modeled on this profound document. Almost half of the signers were of Scottish descent.
The US Senate declared a resolution and National Tartan Day was passed on March 20, 1998. The observation commemorates these aspects and recognizes achievements of people of Scottish descent.
The current format is noted as having originated in Canada in the mid-1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s.
In Australasia the similar International Tartan Day is held on July 1, the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription that banned the wearing of tartan.
Tartan Day observations have come to include the wearing of apparel made of clan tartans primarily including kilts, parades, pipe band performances, Highland dancing and competitions as well other Scottish-themed events.
